Keyword Ideation
Keyword ideation surfaces new keyword opportunities based on your existing rankings, your competitors’ keyword footprints, and semantic topic clusters. It’s how you find keywords you should be ranking for but aren’t.
How it works
Section titled “How it works”VisibilityIQ combines three data sources for keyword ideation:
- Your organic keyword data — keywords you’re already ranking for (position 1–100), from your VisibilityIQ rank tracking.
- Competitor keyword footprints — keywords your competitors rank for that you don’t, extracted from the competitor intelligence crawls.
- Keyword clustering — groups related keywords by semantic similarity so you can see topic themes, not just individual terms.
Finding keyword gaps
Section titled “Finding keyword gaps”Go to Project → Keywords → Ideation (or the Keyword Landscape tab). The gap view shows keywords where competitors have meaningful rankings and you have none. Columns include:
- Keyword — the search query
- Search volume — monthly search volume in your target market
- Gap type — how significant the gap is (Missing, Weak, Competitive, Opportunity)
- Top competitor — which competitor ranks highest for this keyword and at what position
- Your position — your current ranking (or blank if you don’t rank)
- Gap severity — a 0–1 score representing urgency; higher = more important to address
Gap types
Section titled “Gap types”| Gap type | What it means |
|---|---|
| Missing | You have no ranking at all; a competitor ranks in top 10 |
| Weak | You rank 50+ while competitors rank in top 20 |
| Competitive | You both rank in top 20; small gap |
| Dominant | You rank significantly higher than competitors |
| Opportunity | Low competition, decent volume — no one dominates |
| Uncontested | You rank well; competitors don’t rank at all |
Focus on Missing and Opportunity gaps first — these have the highest upside and lowest competition friction.
Intent filtering
Section titled “Intent filtering”Every keyword is classified by search intent:
- Informational — users looking for answers or information
- Navigational — users looking for a specific site or page
- Commercial — users comparing options before buying
- Transactional — users ready to take action (buy, sign up, download)
Filter by intent to focus your content strategy. Transactional gaps are usually highest commercial priority; informational gaps feed top-of-funnel content.
Adding gap keywords to tracking
Section titled “Adding gap keywords to tracking”From the ideation view, check the keywords you want to track and click Add to tracking. They’ll be added to your rank-tracking keyword list and start receiving daily position updates from the next sync.
Keyword clustering
Section titled “Keyword clustering”Click Cluster view to group keywords by topic. VisibilityIQ uses semantic similarity to group related terms — for example, “best running shoes”, “top running shoes 2026”, and “running shoes for wide feet” would cluster together.
Clusters help you plan content: instead of creating one page per keyword, you create one strong page that targets a whole cluster. The cluster view shows which clusters you have existing content for and which are entirely unaddressed.
Sync cadence
Section titled “Sync cadence”Keyword ideation data updates when either your rank tracking syncs (weekly by default) or your competitor crawls run. You can trigger a manual sync from Project → Settings → Connectors.
